| Biography |
Bree Heffernan joined Onemda in 2009 to work on the ARC-funded Victorian Aboriginal Child Mortality Study, which seeks to build a mortality profile of Victoria's Aboriginal (and non-Aboriginal) children 1988-2008. During this time Bree has co-authored a number of publications exploring issues of Indigenous identification in administrative and statutory datasets, infant and child mortality in Western Australia, models of multi-agency first response to the sudden and unexpected death of an infant, and the issue of low birth weight in the Aboriginal population.
Bree is currently engaging in a study to document the history of policies implemented to improve Indigenous identification in Victorian health datasets since 1980 from information provided by key informants.
Bree joined Onemda from the Koori Human Services Unit (KHSU), Department of Human Services, where she worked in the data team for a number of years. In the KHSU, Bree was involved in developing strategies to improve the accuracy of Indigenous identification in hospital, birth and death datasets and the analysis and reporting of information to inform policy makers, health services and the community on the health status of Victoria’s Aboriginal population.
In 2010, Bree completed a Master Degree in Public Health.
