What is the closing date?
For the 2012 course, the closing date for applications is Wednesday 30 November 2011.

Who runs the course?
The ‘Professional Certificate In Indigenous Research’ course is run by Murrup Barak - Melbourne Institute for Indigenous Development, but is largely administered by the University’s Melbourne School of Population Health.

Is the course an Award course?
Yes. Upon successful completion of the course you will be awarded a ‘Professional Certificate in Indigenous Research’ by The University of Melbourne.

How many subjects are involved?
The Professional Certificate is a single-subject course. The subject title is ‘Indigenous Research’, and the Subject Code is MULT90022.

When does the course run?
The intensive component is run from Monday 13th to Friday 17th February (inclusive), 2012.

Where is the course held?
The course is a 5-day intensive held at the University of Melbourne’s Parkville Campus.  Accommodation is provided for students of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.

What are the selection criteria?
You must:

  • Be enrolled in a Research Higher Degree course (defined as at least 2/3 research) at Masters level or above;
  • Have written support from your research supervisor
  • Provide other written documentation as required

Is there a quota?
Yes, the maximum intake is 20. At least three-quarters of the places will be allocated to applicants of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, from any discipline. Non-Indigenous applicants must be doing research on Indigenous topics.

What are the fees?
Costs are subsidised for students of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. All other students will be required to pay $5104 for the 25 point compulsory subject.

What are the assessment requirements?
•    Full-time attendance for the 5 day intensive
•    Two oral presentations
•    Reflective journal
•    5000 word assignment

How are applicants selected?
A Selection Committee will decide the allocation of places. Interviews or further information may be required.

How do I enrol?
Applications are submitted online. Detailed information on how to apply, supporting documentation required, and deadlines can be found here.

What is the Process?
The process involves:

  • Submitting an Online Application and supporting documentation by the application deadline (supporting documents can be sent in hard copy to Elizabeth Dent – see below)
  • Applications are assessed by the Selection Committee shortly after the deadline.
  • Successful applicants receive an offer of a place, in writing.
  • Applicants accept the offer and enrol online (This last step is essential).

Is there any pre-reading?
Yes. Readings will be sent to you in advance.

What options of further study are available if I successfully complete the Professional Certificate?
Students who successfully complete the Professional Certificate can apply for the Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Research and Leadership (GradCertIRL)
The core 25 point subject MULT90022 - Indigenous Research - taught in the ProfCertIR is a pre-requisite for the GradCertIRL and students will be given credit for this subject in the GradCertIRL.
