Caroline Ackland
Master of Public Health (International Health)What were you doing before you became a student at the Melbourne School of Population Health?
Having deferred my studies in Physiotherapy, I opted for a more public, holistic focus on health by completing a Bachelor of Nursing. Since qualifying and working in Australia, I have completed the Overseas Nurses Program to enable me to gain nursing registration in the United Kingdom, where I worked in a plethora of settings for two years. I have also travelled to a variety of underprivileged communities and worked as a volunteer nurse in Central India.
What made you apply for your course?
I was interested in this course as an opportunity to challenge and advance my career in nursing. I was confident that Melbourne University's highly recommended MPH program would not only provide me with the knowledge and skills necessary to work within the public health context, but also ensure extensive opportunities to learn and study in Victoria’s most reputable University. Combining my travel experiences to a variety of underprivileged communities, with a keen interest in my current employment as a Community Nurse, I have realised that public health is the area in which I would like to make a difference.
What makes the Melbourne School of Population Health a great place to study?
It has always been my ambition to use my nursing skills and knowledge in a manner to support initiatives and address urgent health issues in underprivileged communities. I feel confident that by completing my MPH, I will be able to incorporate my passion for discovering new cultures and expanding my knowledge about the world and its people, into a successful career in International Health. The support, structure and guidance offered by The School of Population Health are what will help create this career pathway.
