What were you doing before you became a student at the Melbourne School of Population Health?

Physiotherapist employed part-time in mainstream community health and part-time in an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation.

What made you apply for your course?

I had been interested in pursuing study but had not identified a particular area of interest until I attended the public sessions of Critical Debates in Aboriginal Health during 2005. It was a great ‘introduction’ to the course for me and to expanding my interest in Aboriginal health – I didn’t consider any other course. All of my interactions with the SPH in that inquiry and interview phase were useful and positive.

What makes the Melbourne School of Population Health a great place to study?

I really enjoy the mode of learning with significant interaction between lecturers and students. The commitment and the availability of staff really makes it a great learning experience. I’m not sure where the qualification will take me specifically, but it has certainly expanded my knowledge and understanding of issues in Aboriginal health, and I am certain I will be working in that domain for some years. I will miss the intellectual challenges and stimulation when I complete.

Any advice for new students?

If you are working significant hours or a demanding role don’t be in a rush to complete in the shortest time available.
