Undergraduate Study Medical Curriculum
Although the School of Population Health does not have an undergraduate program, it has extensive involvement in the undergraduate medical curriculum for the Faculty of Medicine, with Population Health featuring strongly within the curriculum.
Population Health is addressed in the teaching of the Health Practice subject in Semesters 1-5 (including an evidence based practice component), the Advanced Medical Science research year in Semesters 6&7, as well as the clinical years in Semesters 8-12. Health Practice is a core subject within the medical curriculum that aims to place the biological understandings in medicine within a psychological, social and cultural context.
Health Practice is delivered by four departments: Population Health; General Practice; Behavioural Sciences; and Psychiatry. Within Health Practice there exists different component disciplinary skills and knowledge bases. These include communication skills, patient centered medicine, evidence based practice, population health, public health, social health, gender and health, biopsychosocial medicine, medical ethics, indigenous health, psychological medicine, and psychiatry. As such, the subject involves the complex task of integrating and applying a wide range of knowledge, skills and attitudes in a coherent, relevant and stimulating way.
