Advanced Medical Science (AMS)

General Information

What is Advanced Medical Science?

Advanced Medical Science (AMS) is a one year undergraduate program that students enrolled in the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree (MBBS) at The University of Melbourne must complete in Semesters 6 and 7. This requirement only applies to school-leaver entrants to the medical course. Graduate entrants do not do AMS. Students who do not wish to continue the MBBS course may exit following the AMS year with a Bachelor of Medical Science (BMedSc) degree.

The AMS year is very different from the rest of the course, and is a unique opportunity (not offered in any other Australian medical course) to encounter new ideas and learn new skills, while engaging in-depth with a particular research topic. Students choose from more than 100 AMS units offered across the Faculty of MDHS, associated teaching hospitals and other approved institutions.
